Presidential Medal of Valor Issues

Here is a brief report from Chief Dyer about the lack of fire service
nominations for the Presidential Medal of Valor. If this is important
to the fire service, then the fire service needs to "insure" that
appropriate nominations (in both quality and quantity) are submitted to
the Valor Board for their consideration

The Presidential Medal of Valor Board met in Chicago on October 29,
2003. The board considered 61 nominations that the DOJ staff had
forwarded to us from over 250 nominations. Law enforcement had
submitted significantly more nominations than the fire service.

The Board recommended five individuals to the Attorney General for his
consideration to receive medals.

DOJ is hopeful that the medals can be presented at the White House prior
to January 1. If that does not happen, the medal presentation will be
in the January-February time frame.

On another note, Ms. Tracy Hienke who has headed the effort at DOJ for
the past two years has been promoted and will now have less direct
contact with the Board and the process.

Please contact me if you should have any questions or comments.
